Back to the Future – A Timeless Classic

There were 19 movies left in the hat of movies that I am shocked my wife hasn’t seen. This week, we drew Back to the Future, which might be the highest up there for me in terms of “how haven’t you seen that”

Pre-viewing:

Before watching this film, my knowledge is strictly limited to John Mulaney’s bit from his Netflix Special, The Comeback Kid. I suggest you watch it. He’s hilarious. 

Post-viewing:

I really enjoyed this film. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, which I tend to appreciate. But it’s also not so over the top that I got annoyed. It’s a good balance. I’m surprised I haven’t seen this before given how much of a classic it is. I think my favorite part was when Marty goes back in time and meets Doc. There’s a tiny puppy with Doc and I can’t help but feel that was meant to be a puppy Einstein… 30 years younger. Time is just a construct.

Nick’s Thoughts:

What an incredibly fun movie. I had a smile on my face almost the entire time. I’ve seen this one a lot. Like, a lot. It’s a timeless film – maximum pun intended.

What was new for me was watching this during a legitimate lightning storm. I’m pretty sure lightning hit our street. I was never sure if the clocktower in the movie was struck early, or if the storm clouds above were looking to smite me.

In my head, Doc had a lot more screen-time than he actually did. He’s largely absent for a good thirty minute stretch. Didn’t remember that. But Michael J. Fox carries this movie as Marty McFly, so I didn’t mind. He really owns this iconic role.

As far as time travel movies go – this is the big Kahuna. Movies with time travel as a major component tend to either be too complicated or hold the audience’s hand too much, but Back to the Future is able to find the perfect balance. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and it mostly just asks its audience to have fun. If you know me, you know that’s my kind of movie.

If you haven’t seen Back to the Future, I encourage you to go back in time and fix that mistake. And if you disagree: make like a tree and… get outta here!
